Jose Carregal - viva

On 16 Dec 2016 José Carregal Romero defended his doctoral dissertation "Contemporary Redefinitions of the Irish Family in Colm Tóibín's Fiction" at the Faculty of Philology and Translation in Vigo. The dissertation was supervised by Dr María Teresa Caneda Cabrera, and the jury included Prof Anne C Fogarty (UCD Dublin), Dr Marisol Molares Ladrón (Alcalá) and Dr Martín Urdiales Shaw (Vigo). On 16 November 2016 we hosted the Seminar The Sociolinguistics of Gibraltar in the 21st Century. The program comprised three talks, the first by Cristina Suárez-Gómez (University of the Balearic Islands) with the title “Gibraltarian English and its status within ‘World Englishes’”, which dealt with the recent history of Gibraltar and the linguistic status of Gibraltarian English according to model of analyses of World Englishes, essentially Schneider’s (2007) Dynamic Model and the analyses of data by D. Levey and D.

Pascual Perez-Paredes

On 14 Nov 2016, Dr Pascual Pérez-Paredes (University of Cambridge) delivered the talk “Native and non-native speaker approaches to story reconstruction in spoken English. A multidimensional analysis” at the Faculty of Philology and Translation in Vigo. In this talk, Dr Pérez-Paredes described Douglas Biber’s ‘Mutidimensional Analysis’ and summarised his recent findings on oral texts produced by native and non-native speakers of English.

Renowned Canadian poet and translator Erín Moure has been distinguised as "Doutora Honoris Causa" by the University of Vigo. The formal ceremony will take place on June 22, 2016 at noon. This distinction is awarded in recognition for her outstanding multilingual poetic production; her dedicated and fruitful efforts to transcultural understanding in her role as translator; her activist support in defense of linguistic, ethnic and sexual minorities; and for her contribution to the international appreciation of Galician cultural heritage. 

Alazne Landa

On 2 May, Alazne Landa (UPV/EHU) gave a talk at the Faculty of Philology and Translation entitled “Society and the 'other' grammars".The labels of superiority or inferiority that are typically associated with certain language varieties are the result of social judgment, not the outcome of linguistic or scientific research.

On 29 April, Ástráður EysteinssonProfessor of Comparative Literature and Literary Translator (University of Iceland / Háskóli Íslands) gave a talk entitled "The Task of the Translator: Kafka In Icelandic", based on his own experience as a (co-) translator of a large part of Franz Kafka's work into Icelandic.
